This Unfortunate Holiday

I usually have a grand time on April Fools’ Day, checking out all of the pranks from my favorite sites like Google, Smashing Magazine, and Gizmodo. I can’t remember the last time somebody pulled one on me, but James McCauley just hit me with a great one. Context: James and I have been working over the last month or so to fix Erickson field, an often-used space on the UMBC campus that seems to be more mud and weeds than grass. We’ve been trying to get some grass to grow as a test, so we seeded and fertilzed a patch over spreak break. There’s been some contoversy over doing this, especially after we found out yesterday that the boss of the person in UMBC Facilities Management had no idea what was going on.

A few minutes ago he IM’d me saying things had gone very bad, and gave me a call. He informed me that he had just recieved an email from Student Judicial Services saying that he was being brought in on charges of dumping chemicals on state property, and that he was going to have to pay a $2000 fine. He led me to believe that somehow the people in Facilities Management had completely flipped their position and were now stabbing us in the back. Unfortuantely for me, this is something that could very likely have happened, and the timing was perfect. He sent me “April fools” via IM a while back…I can imagine how hard he’s laughing right now.

Nice one, James.

Oh, you were the one who put grass seeds in that massive bald spot on Erickson Field? I walked over it on the way to class today and noticed seeds all over the place and countless tiny little blades beginning to sprout up, so it looks like your efforts are bearing fruit.

Good deal. People have been walking all over that field and the grass is still taking root, so here’s hoping.
