I didn’t think I’d be driving on these roads so soon after Rachel and I drove from Maryland to California. We’ve recognized a number of places we either passed by or stopped at back in July. It’s looking like our group is going to recapitulate our western journey even further with a detour to the Grand Canyon tomorrow. I think more than half of the team has yet to visit and it would be a shame for them to miss out when we are so close.
In the car today Kelsi wrote a haiku for each member of the group (and one for every state we passed through); we saw their haiku and raised them a Shakespearean sonnet. They’ve continued remembering the trip in verse with a series of rhymes, so we have to think of a clever response for tomorrow. You can read all of them on the Re:Live Facebook fan page.
On Saturday morning when we were were in the van waiting and looking for places to work, Jose saw a volunteer struggling to dump a container full of debris onto a pile. Jose immediately pulled over, jumped out and helped the guy, shook his hand, and hopped back in. All he said to us as he pulled back onto the road was “Re:Live Represent!” What a champion. I think that story is a good example of the spirit of our team and it’s been fantastic getting to work and hang out with such people.
