If you haven’t heard about the Elliott Spitzer debacle, the brief summary is that he’s both the governor of New York and a frequenter of a classy prostitution ring. Since the story broke, he’s been disgraced and resigned yesterday.
What’s making me smile sardonically this morning, however, is not the developing situation so much as the fact that they managed to find his hooker’s MySpace page.
Apparently she was living in New York to pursue her career in music—she does in fact have an example of her vocal artistry on the page. I wonder which part of that included, “having sex with high-profile clients?” I’m guessing she realized she got more money from one night with the governor than from a month of music performances (especially thanks to general ridiculousness rampant in the music industry right now). Not to mention that the power she felt at being a public figure’s personal callgirl must have been “music to her ears.”
On the other side you have Governor Spitzer, champion of accountability and ethics in public offices. It always gets me when these guys fall—I mean, who thinks nobody will ever find out? I have absolutely no sympathy for the fellow. People like this falling long and hard helps to restore the expectation that justice will be served…there are a lot of less public figures to “finance” our budding female musicians.
Welcome to the new internet, folks—for better or worse.
