First Quarter Down

This morning I turned in the take-home portion of my biochem final exam, the last of my assignments for the quarter. That’s one quarter down…only thirty one more to go. I’m also wrapping things up with my first research rotation. When school starts back up on January 3rd I’m going to be switching from traumatic brain injury to Alzheimer’s disease, while testing out another potential laboratory home for my next three years.

This past weekend, while it was below freezing and flurrying in Maryland with single-digit windchills, SoCal decided to thumb its nose at the East with sunny, 86-degree days. While Maryland was shoveling, Rachel and I went swimming. It isn’t difficult to start getting spoiled by this. I’m already starting to think temperatures in the 50s are cold, which is pretty weak.

Yesterday, we got a check in the mail from our insurance company. Apparently, if the company does well that year, the board of directors votes to return the extra money to the customers based on how much each of them paid in premiums that year. Just like that, we’ve found yet another reason why USAA is the best insurance company around. I mean, how many companies would do something like that, let alone insurance companies? No wonder they’re always winning awards.

In keeping with our trend from the past two years, we haven’t done any Christmas decorating. We left most of our Christmas tree ornaments back at our respective parents’ houses, so even if we put one up, we wouldn’t have much to hang on its branches. Before, it didn’t seem like that big of a deal since we just visited our families and enjoyed their ornamentation, but post-move, we’re starting to consider making more of an effort. We were thinking that we could pick up a decent artificial tree after the holiday, when they’re all on clearance, and be all prepared for next year. See, we’re not complete Scrooges.

Man, I felt the same way about decorating. I didn’t feel like doing anything, and now my place feels like it’s missing the spirit of the holiday.

Glad you finished the semester strong, and so jealous of the weather out there. 😛

You start to think about how if you put anything up, you’ll just have to take it down and store it. I think if I had a basement as big as yours I’d be more motivated, but with apartments it’s easy to feel like it’s not worth it.
