Headshot

I got to go shooting for the second time in my life today at a range owned in part by one of Rachel’s and my friends. He’s got an amazing collection of weapons both modern and historical and as a result Rachel and I got to work a variety of firearms. We tried out three different .357s, some 9mms, and I even got to fire his new AK-47.

It sounds dumb but after playing first-person-shooters it is really neat to be able to try out the real thing and distinguish the truth from the fiction. For example, the whole move they do on cowboy movies where they use their left hand to pull back the hammer and fire with their right hand (they do that in one of the Back to the Future movies, I believe) is totally bogus if you are wanting to hit anything. Double-action (semi-automatic) pistols actually have more kickback power than larger guns like the .357s, because they have to use the recoil to reset the action. The difference I saw was that the kick was directed straight back as opposed to sending the gun upwards.

Turns out I’m a halfway decent shot, I’m proud to say. I also learned a lot of things about gun safety which makes me much more comfortable around them. I’m still amazed about how mechanical they are—they have so much power and there is nothing electronic about them. Would you fancy that! At any rate, I decided to hang one of the targets we used on my bedroom door—it’ll be a good conversation piece.
