Interviewed

This weekend I had my first medical school interview, a welcome contrast to the slate of rejections I’ve received. Heading to Loma Linda University and the 70-degree weather of Southern California after the subfreezing temperatures in Maryland didn’t hurt either.

While there’s no way to know for sure, I think the interviews went well. I met with two people, each with different styles, but each of them made me feel comfortable. I didn’t know exactly what to expect going in and ended up having a positive experience, which gives me much-needed confidence for my next two interviews. The university is a nice place, and definitely somewhere I could picture myself living for a while. The gorgeous weather does a lot to offset the sting of higher gas prices and 10% state sales tax.

I stayed one night with a second-year med student whose uncanny similarities to myself would have made him a perfect roommate. In addition to the backyard swimming pool, his house had all kinds of fruit trees: Grapefruit, lemons, Valencia oranges, tangelos, persimmons, avocados. It probably marks me as an outsider, but I got very excited about picking a lemon off the tree and squeezing it into my iced tea.

This is probably also a good time to thank all of the people whose prayers and support have been extremely helpful over the past few months. This whole med school process is a real mood-swing.
